Fusing Rap and Yoga to find Peace

“Parents of Silver’s students have noticed the lessons paying off at home, as well. "[It's] something to show my kids. You can get out of it. You have to help others. You just can't shut down," Yazmin Adams, a single mother of three children who lost their father in a drive-by shooting, Adams says the message inspired her as well, helping motivate her to get a bachelor's degree in child development. "The whole family, we are all benefiting from it," she says.”

Family Yoga Night to Celebrate Black History Month

“In 2017 KIPP Empower Academy launched its afterschool program called LOVE ACTIVISTS, which aims to promote justice through instructional meditation, yoga, music, and socioemotional learning. For Black History month, students who participate in this program will spend additional time learning about and reflecting on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and many other notable social justice activists.”

Teaching from the Heart

“Ms. Silver also leads professional development for trauma-informed teaching practices and connects the KIPP SoCal initiative H.E.A.R.T. (Healing Environments & Responses to Trauma) to her daily practices. “It is our responsibility to teach social and environmental justice so our children can make choices that will create a more sustainable, just, and healthy world - that is equity,” she notes.”

Interview with our founder, Alizah Silver

“Memorizing, recording and performing the lyrics transforms these children’s lives and allows them to be compassionate leaders of their community. We want to make social-emotional skills, healing trauma, non-violence and social and environmental justice cool!”

Interview with our founder, Alizah Silver

“Every child deserves to be taught how to: be happy, self-regulate, calm down strong feelings, to go inward and meditate, to have character, integrity, respect, to love themselves, to have empathy and compassion for others, to take care of their community and environment, to be healthy, to have courage and resiliency and stand up for what they believe.”
